Gaspé Atlantic Salmon Trip - Sept 2006

Altantic Salmon 9-2006

Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar, or The Great Leaper), return to their natal rivers to spawn and are a great challenge for all fly anglers. The salmon are *not* feeding in the rivers and we have to entice to salmon to take our flies.

6 NYAC anglers had the most action tangling with these great fish which ignored many of our flies. Then a few were caught and quickly released. It was all catch and release fishing for us. One salmon about 30 lbs was hooked and lost.

The Gaspé's salmon rivers are vodka clear emerald colored spring fed waters in an area of astounding beauty and untouched wilderness. Our guides Austin, Gordy, and Tony made sure we were filled with the history of salmon fishing along with expert guidance. This is visual fishing to salmon holding in their lies. These Gaspé rivers are well protected by the guardians under the aegis of the local government with full intentions of protecting this great fishery which boasts mostly salmon with many over 30 lbs and a much smaller percentage of grilse (salmon with 1 year at sea).

Our lodge, built in the 1930's, had all the rustic charm of a fishing camp and brought us back to days when camaraderie, fishing stories, and the sharing of meals and spirits amongst angling friends are what great memories are made of. (Malbaie River Outfitters)

The Gaspé Peninsula has all the natural beauty of an Atlantic coastline dotted with small towns and unique rock formations. Fort Prevel defended the North American waters from the German U-Boats which infiltrated this area in WW2.

We all tussled with the great Atlantic salmon and Jim Dwyer caught the largest fish. Congratulations to Jim!

Please return to this photo gallery soon as we will be uploading more pictures.
