Reno Air Races 2002

The Air Race Gang was really looking forward to the races this year, having lost our opportunity to go last year due to September 11. We were not disappointed, and here are some images I took during the weekend of September 15 and 16.

A pair of F-104 Starfighters. These planes no longer serve in the military. 2002 is the first time I had seen any of these jets at an airshow. The engine has a distinctive resonant howl just above the idle setting.

Strega (Italian for Witch) is the name of the P-51 which was trying to catch the Bear when the speed record was set in 1991. It was one of the best races we had ever seen and backs up my observation that the speed and excitement of the race is determined by the second fastest airplane. This is Strega's support van in the pits.
