Indian Paintbrush

Victoria Glade Nature Conservancy Preserve

Recovering from a hard freeze at Victoria Glade Nature Conservancy preserve. This glade is a south-facing hillside of dolomite (a kind of limestone) with a very thin layer of soil. The environment is difficult: windy, and very cold in the winter but very hot and dry in the summer. These plants are small - six or eight inches - but their color makes them visible from a distance on the rocky hillside.

I really like this. It shows the flowers in their environment, and the dof keeps the focus where it should be (to say nothing of the color.)
