Maple Burl Live edge Bowl

I made this bowl in 1999 from a burl that was given to me by a good friend from Yarmouth. On one maple tree we got over 20 burls, this bowl is about 10" in diameter. Turning a live edge like this is a real challenge, trying to keep the bark from exploding off the piece and avoiding the tool catching on the open parts of the piece - patience!

I think this is the best example of where I employ the Michelangelo philosohy of removing the parts of the wood that do not look like a bowl. I really have no idea what the final product will look like when I start turning - the wood will tell me.
