Just before we reached California Pass, we came across a jeep that got too close to the edge
of the road, and the (soaked) road gave way, causing the jeep to slide about 8 feet sideways;
at this particular location, the worst that could have happened would have been to slide down
another 20 feet -- no real scary dropoff, but it makes you think. Someone else with a
satellite phone drove by, called the wrecker crew out to the rescue. The fix-it guys are
wrapping a strap around the undercarriage and will haul the jeep back up with their wrecker.
We saw the drivers a few hours later -- all is well...
