I saw this hawk along US highway 285 between Vaughn, NM and Clines Corners, NM, sitting on a telephone wire.
I opportunistically took a picture of him leaving. Thanks to Pat Marklevitz and Gale Owings for offering ID's for the hawk --
my original caption "NM Hawk" was misleading. This photograph is probably not good enough to provide a definitive ID, but I'll settle on Swainson's based on probabilities for sighting one of these in NM -- RBW
