cambodia

i'm standing here, barbed wire clenched in my tiny palms,
on the ground where so many of my country's people were brutally massacred.
look into my eyes. what do you see?
can you see into my soul, to understand the pain and injustice my country has endured?
i'm reaching for you. will you understand, or simply turn away?

An amazing portrait - the hand on the barbed wire seems to say it all.

What an incredible connection you have made with the direct eye contact and up-close shot. Beautifully framed by the tough environment she's in too - providing a strong context for her life.

This is an iconic image. It truly reflects the soul of this child, and through her, the soul of a people. What makes it so poignant is the fact that one hand reaches out to us, as you say, as if to make contact. The other unconsciously holds the barbed wire, a symbol of a brutal past. It is more than a portrait, Ruthie. It is a statement from your heart to ours, through hers.
