Without knowing much about that culture and the meaning of alms, one can appreciate the human and artistic qualities of this picture. Very vibrant. Beautiful close-up.

I love shots that focus on a detail - portraits that don't necessarily include the face but tell us about the subject by showing us another element of who they are and what their life is. Lovely shot and very vibrant also.

The essence of a culture and a spiritual tradition abstracted in an exquisit and superb way! This photograph really summs up the buddhism... Awesome!

Alms bowls, collecting alms and the meaning of alms is so rich in culture and meaning. If you Google this stuff, you can enjoy stories, and wisdom, and personal reflection all night long. Ruth, pictures like this make you a Goodwill Ambassador from the West. You can easily cross cultural divides with empathy and sensitivity to local tradition. You are very gifted.

Detail tells the story here. You abstract the image, focusing our attention on the simple, wrinkled orange robe of the monk, and the carefully insulated pot he carries to collect the alms -- in the form of hot rice -- that will keep him alive for another day. It is an "essence" shot, Ruthie. It tells its story by showing less and saying more.
