June 13b: Bright Eyes

Escondido, CA

My ‘normal’ PaD posted this afternoon was an underwhelming experience. Gosh, folks don’t seem to get too lit up about a couple of street lights ;-).

So I spent some time tonight trying some “beauty techniques” I was reading about in a Photo Magazine tonight.

Canon EOS 20D ,Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM
1/60s f/5.0 at 40.0mm iso200 with Flash full exif

other sizes: small medium large original auto

Hi Robin... I have to take the minority view on this one as well. I prefer the original (which is a beautiful shot IMHO). What happened here is that while you correctly applied the gaussain blur, you failed to leave the edges sharp and so what I see is a pasty, blurry looking image rather than a sharp image with creamy smooth features. Also, I think light is a key feature in these retouched model photos. I think maybe a little dodging might have been in order. A little burning as well though I am less sure of that. Have a look at one of the close ups of wanda and I think you will see sharp lines but creamy features and definitely you will see a lot of contrast and light. Like Gary I am going to give you the go ahead to delete me now. Not that you need my permission of course ;-)

AHHH those eyes are talking to me, she wants me !!! seriously beautiful shot and I like the cropping ---- Bob

Sorry, Robin, but i must take a minority view. I think you overdid the eyes somehow, and they cease looking natural. It's the white in the model's left eye that looks artificial to me. Otherwise, the image is good, skintones seem pretty natural although her left cheek near the border seems a bit pasty. Feel free to erase this comment if you'd like! :-)

@Sami and others ... the "original" is athttp://www.pbase.com/rtwo/image/44521679
This is tighter crop, Gaussian blur and erased the blur around eyes, lips, and eyebrow. Used spot healing on a few blemishes on her face.

Oh, you've have done such great things for this girl. This could be used in a makeup ad.

Great photo, Robin! For those of us that do not have the trained photographic eye (yes, we exist on PBase!), can we see the original, low glam shot?
JeremyGood14-Jun-2005 20:23
So, looks like maybe you used some Gaussian blur layers on the cheeks and nose, and some dodging on the eyes. Maybe a little burn on the brows and lashes? Perhaps some dodging on the lips as well?
Nicely done. I'd dodge the left eye a touch more for consistency.
