Why would anyone want to spend their Sunday afternoon walking amongst rusted automobiles? I don't know. I just had to get it out of my system. I have been driving past this salvage yard for years, telling myself that there must be a picture in there somewhere. Clyde Turner, 68, spends everyday, 7 days a week, with his junk, but you don't want to call it "junk" around him. He says they're antiques. He has been owner/operator of this salvage yard, north of Bassett VA off 57, for more than 40 years. Recovering from a stroke a few months ago, he seems just fine. He wouldn't let me explore until I had sat down and talked for a while. A few interesting tidbits about Clyde; He drives a 1940 Ford he bought when he was 17. The actress Sally Fields once stopped by and gave him an autographed hat because he had supplied some automobiles for a movie. He claims that the old truck in front of his shop was used in the filming of "The Walton’s" movie. He feeds his black Chow Tootsy Rolls, still in the wrapper, and his chicken will jump in his lap for its share of the candy.
