cemetery and steam

View towards St. Ignatius Cemetery, from South Street; facing south.
(This is a different cemetery than the Oddfellows Cemetery,
which is on the other side of Rt. 61: to the left, or to the east.)

Steam comes from the underground coal mine fire.

There was a legend about a "curse" placed on Centralia - in 1869,
by the first Roman Catholic priest in Centralia, Father Daniel Ignatius McDermott.
He was roughed up by the "Molly(ie) Maguires" for his condemnation of the gang.
He predicted that St. Ignatius Church would be the last structure standing in Centralia.

Close, but it wasn't (the church was demolished in 1997). Other houses still stand...

(The film, "The Molly Maguires," starring Sean Connery,
was filmed less than 15 miles away, in Eckley / Freeland)
