The fate of the original Vantage Bridge was most unusual. The cantilever structure was carefully dismantled and placed in storage when the new crossing opened in November 1962. Completion of Lower Monumental Dam ended operation of Lyons Ferry in 1968. The state highway commission spent nearly a million dollars replacing it. The old Vantage Bridge was taken out of storage and resurrected a short distance downstream of the doomed ferry landing on the Snake. The piers and an additional 400 foot plate girder span, needed to close that river’s 2000 foot gap, were built by Murphy Brothers Construction Company. The “Phoenix” on the Snake opened for traffic on December 20, 1968.
