July 9, 2006

I don't know how it works at your house,
but when the phone rings at 5:40 in the morning at my house, it can't be good news.
When I looked at the 'Caller ID' and saw it was
the federal government calling, I figured this REALLY can't be good.

Caller on the other end, "Is this Mr. Royall?"
I choked out a, "Yes it is".
He continued, "Are you aware of the whereabouts of the Sailing Vessel Shibumi?"
Without responding I bolted to the window and swiped back the blinds.
He said again, "Mr. Royall, are you aware of the location of the vessel Shibumi?"
I was now more emboldened, "Yes. Yes, I am".
Him, "Are you or the vessel in distress?".
I looked again through the still swaying blinds.
Shibumi sat quietly at the dock.
"Sir can you tell me the reason for this call?", was my only reply.

He went on to explain that the Coast Guard received a distress signal from a VHF radio in our area.
That radio had a discrete code that was one number different from Shibumi's discrete code.
Since Shibumi was registered nearby they wanted to check that I had not entered my code incorrectly.
At that point I started to feel good about the call.
Had I had a problem and boogered-up the distress signal,
these guys would have been on the case, anyway.
Sleep well tonight. Your Coast Guard is awake.

Great narrative! Would make a great short story.

Nice shot and story, lets hope the distress signal was a mistake, and not some poor vessel in trouble.

While I certainly agree with everything said below, let me add something: not only a great story, and a heart stopper for sure, but then you have the presence of mind afterwards to think, "Ah! A PaD possibility!!! Let's see if there's a record of the call on my phone. Aha, there is! Where's the camera. People are going to love this!!!"

And we do. Thanks for a great story, glad everything is okay, the Coast Guard is wonderful, and all's well with the world again.

Quite a story. I actually have more faith in the Coast Guard than in some our other branches.

A call like that can take a few years off of your life, can't it? The Coast Guard is alright in my book.

Great story!! Like you, a call at 5:40 am would jump start my heart for the same reason...it cannot be good news.
This is a great story that I will pass on to my neighbor whose son just completed the CG Academy. TFS.

WHEW! I was looking out the blinds with you Dave!
Daughter Morgan, before she went USArmy, worked at CGHQ in DC. I have personally never met a finer group of men. They still email me of their goings on, and Morgan still visits whenever she's in the area.Their response center is out of this world. Unbelieveable.
