Moose Calf

I had quite the day yesterday! (Feb.20/09) First thing in the morning when I was heading into town I came across a moose calf on our road. It was acting so strange! It was right in the middle of the road and was in no hurry to move. I turned the car around and went back to the house to grab my camera. Wasn't sure if it would still be there....but it was. Got several shots and noticed that it looked pretty rough looking and I even wondered if it was ill or injured. There was a large spot of fur missing from its shoulder area. I thought I'd run back to the house and get some hay for it. I thought if I could at least get it to the side of the road I could get past it. It didn't react to the presence of the hay at all. Then a neighbour came along and drove right up beside it. It hardly moved at all. It looked like the fellow in the passenger seat could have almost reached his arm out and touch it - it was so close. The neighbour drove on his way. Then one of my son's friends came along (also a neighbour) and then he started walking towards it. The moose then started to walk away (normally a moose would have run away a long time before now...this was all so strange! ) The moose started to head up towards the highway which isn't far away so our friend got between the highway and the moose. All of a sudden the moose charged at him but slipped and fell on the slippery road. Good thing! That scared the moose enough to start heading away from the direction of the highway. Finally the moose got off the road and went to the bush running alongside the road. He at least was off the road but we were concerned that the highway still wasn't far away and things could get really bad if he went that direction. My friend left a message for the Ministry of Natural Resources and I spoke with a police dispatcher. I then left to head back to the house to return my camera and try again to head to town. That was the end of that adventure!
