First Wisconsin picture: water tower near North Point lighthouse |
Within an hour of landing in Milwaukee, I was pulling up to my first lighthouse: beautiful North Point. |
The front of North Point. |
As I was driving to the waterfront to take a cruise, a thunderous thing roared overhead. It turned out to be a B1 bomber! |
A bridge opening for us as we left the Milwaukee Boat Line dock. |
On the cruise I saw kayakers, interesting bridges, the waterfront, and lighthouses. |
Schooner passing Milwaukee breakwater light |
The pier light from the cruise with part of Milwaukee in the background |
Both lights from the water |
The beautiful Discovery Museum |
Milwaukee Art Museum from the water. |
There was an airshow the next day, and pilots were practicing wild maneuvers above us. |
The breakwater light up close. Built in 1926, it was one of the last lights to be built on the Great Lakes. |

Paddleboats along the Milwaukee River |
The ale house from the boat. I can't believe I went to Milwaukee & didn't drink any beer! |
After the cruise I drove north. In Port Washington, I walked out to to the art deco lighthouse on Lake Michigan. |
I'm not a boater, so I don't know what it means, but I found this sign on the lighthouse interesting! |
The lowly Point Washington south pier light |
Ducks along the pier, with one overachiever in the water |
One of Port Washington's lighthouses is privately owned (and mowed!) |
More walking on piers: The homely (and graffiti-defaced) Sheboygan breakwater light. Kids were jumping off the pier. |
The gulls had taken over at Sheboygan. |
When I got to this graffiti ("This will pass") I thought of my brother in the hospital...hopefully his/my sadness will pass. |
Sheboygan |
I spent my 1st night in Kewaunee at the Harbor Lights Lodge, cheap but decent. Here's the Kewaunee light. |
Kewaunee lighthouse about 7 PM |
Herons behind the distribution center in Kewaunee near the light |
I got up early Saturday and went to photograph the Kewaunee light from a park and little beach near by |
A tug in Kewaunee that you could tour |
A lowly but interesting light: Algoma North Pier Head light |
I walked out to get as close as I could, scattering a lot of very comfy gulls. Apparently few people walk on the pier. |
I photographed this yard decoration in Algoma |
I walked across the bridge in Sturgeon Bay and had to wait when it opened for boats! |
Seeing segways on the bridge reminded me of how much fun we had in Prague on segways! |
The very interesting Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal Pier Light before it started to rain |
It amazed me that such large structures were erected on a small pier or island like this. |
To see these lightouses (this one reminded me of a rocket!), I had to stay on a path through the Coast Guard station. |
Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal lighthouse |
Sherwood Point lighthouse outside Sturgeon Bay. A baby was crying as I took this picture from the "No Entry" sign. |
A nice blue sky helped me photograph pretty Cana Island light, but the heat & humidity that day were worse than DC's!!! |
I suffered through a horrible attack of biting flies to visit this lighthouse (Eagle Bluff) in Peninsula SP, Fish Creek |
Observation tower in Peninsula State Park |
From the observation tower. (The Door Co. peninsula has Green Bay to the west and Lake M to the east.) |
I checked out the Garrison Keillor-ish "Lumberjacks In Love" play in the park |
An idyllic scene in Ephraim, Wisconsin, where I spent one night |
Baileys Harbor rear range light looked like an old schoolhouse! |
The front range one wasn't in great shape! |
Pathetic Old Baileys Harbor light with its damaged lantern room. |
I took a ferry to Washington Island from Northport. There were cars, people and dogs! |
A surprising number of cars were crammed on, and a few people walked on as well. |
From the ferry, I saw Plum Island light |
And a distant view of Pilot Island light |
The Stavkirke, Wash Island, begun in 1991 & patterned after Norwegian medieval churches. There's lot of Scandinavia in Wisc! |
Stavkirke dragonheads |
Hanging inside is a replica of a Mackinaw schooner |
The church was largely built by volunteers, and it is beautiful inside and out. |
Another ferry, the little Karfi passenger ferry, took me to Rock Island - rocking and pitching! Glad I don't get seasick! |
Apparently some people didn't want to be bored on carless/entertainment-less Rock Island, way up north! |
There is little on Rock Island except a lighthouse and this stunning boathouse built by a very eccentric man. |
The owner, who wanted to own an island, was Icelandic. Therefore, the boathouse was built in Icelandic style. |
The whole structure was beautiful - almost too beautiful for a boathouse! |
From the ferry, I walked to this building to find the 1 1/4 mile path to the light. It was mostly uphill. |
After a bit of walking, I came to this strange wood thing on the hill. |
Eureka! Pottawatomie lighthouse, Wisconsin's first U.S. lighthouse (built 1836) |
The 2 guides inside had been on the ferry with me. They were staying a week, and showed me around. |
Then it was back on the 2 ferries to get back down south. This is in Manitowoc, Lake Michigan |
Manitowoc, almost dusk, from near the ferry dock |
On the drive along Lake Michigan north of Manitowoc, I saw a beautiful rainbow |
The pier lighthouse in Two Rivers has been moved to the fishing village. This is the smallest lighthouse I've ever seen. |
Rawley Point light in Point Beach State Park. I got there at dusk with fading light. |
Wisconsin had lots of great lighthouses, but Rawley Point was my favorite. I went back early the next morning to photograph it. |
The Coasties living at Rawley Pt were lucky-huge, beautifully maintained house, right on the beach! |
The Wind Point lighthouse in Racine was a beautiful complex, complete with a number of preserved buildings. |
The fuel (oil) house at Wind Point. |
There were 2 fog houses. This is the new one, I think. |
The little dinky breakwater light in Racine turned out to be awfully cute! |
Racine North Breakwater light with Wind Point way in the background |
Kenosha pier lighthouse turned out to be the teen hangout spot, with kids jumping off the pier. |
Tandem jump at Kenosha |
Lining up to jump |

Trolley in Kenosha near the lighthouse |
Door County had tidy farms, fishing, cherries, highways with letters (wonder where highway XX went?) and tons of lighthouses. |
