We are back in Great Britain now, after leaving the Republic of Ireland |
During breakfast we got our first view of Weymouth as we slid into Portland with its breakwater forts and old lighthouses |
Howard had a great view of the Topper Nat'l Sailing Championships at the Nat'l Sailing Academy (venue for 2012 Olympic sailing) |
Took the shuttle to Weymouth & found the rowboat for 1 euro over to the beach area |
Weymouth is a charming seaside city - much more attractive than the Delaware beaches I'm used to! |
It has the beautiful Royal Hotel and amusements galore to keep kids and adults busy. |
Where else can you see a Punch & Judy show right on the beach? |
Some beach chairs advertise the show |
There are donkey rides, too |
The newest attraction in Weymouth/Portland is Sandworld - which was advertised in Portland |
There's an old town bridge that goes up every 2 hrs. to let boats through |
I was in a pub with WiFi emailing Shelby when I heard some commotion. |
The bridge was opening. |
View near the bridge. I then went back to the ship to eat & see if Howard wanted to go to Portland with me. |
He was happy playing "golf" so I went back to find the King George statue, where the special 501 bus came. |
The open-topped bus went right past the Jubilee Clock on the esplanade |
It passed Weymouth Harbour and headed south to Portland |
Then it lumbered past Chesil Beach, with its fist-sized pebbles. This IS the Jurassic Coast of England, after all! |
Somewhere on the 501 route, I shot this picture of Portland/Chesil Beach |
And a local pointed out this fleeting glance at the Olympic rings. (Oly sailing events held here in 2012) |
Rooftops in Portland from the open-top 501 bus |
I saw (quickly) the 2 "other" Portland Bill lighthouses. |
Portland Bill High lighthouse (now rentable) |
The bus stopped at Portland Bill & people with concessionaire cards (pensioners) had to queue for the next bus. I stayed on. |
Beach shacks near Portland Bill lighthouse |
Then it was back to Weymouth, passing the Sea Life Tower. It was a bit pricey, so I passed it by - but it DID look fun! |
Back at the harbour, I took the short rowboat trip with a very polite English family, & asked them to take my picture |
It was a cheap, fun, fast way to get across the water - and all the kids, big and small, loved it! |
From the ship I looked for & found the King George III chalk carving on a hill not far from Portland |
White cliffs of the Jurassic Coast, sailboat & swimmers, viewed from the ship |
Sigh - our last dinner on Marina, in our favorite eating place. Howard's favorite restaurant manager was there to comfort us. |
For sailaway, while most people were (unfortunately) at dinner, Weymouth/Portland provided a 3-gun salute. |
What a great way to end another fabulous cruise, and a wonderful visit to the UK & Norway! |
We sailed past one of the fortifications in Portland harbour & off toward Southampton |
And there was a beautiful sunset, too - with Weymouth's Sea Life Tower popping up above the horizon |
The next morning it was all business, as we left Southampton's QE terminal to get to Heathrow for our UA flight home. |
Rate security? Howard had to wait 20 mins. before they even looked in his carryon, so no green today.(See more pics, next album) |
