On the Monday before Thanksgiving, we flew to Burbank to have Thanksgiving with Howard's Aunt Martha & the Zeitlins. |
Turkey Time! Claudia provided this great picture of Hannah, Karen, Bee, Sherrie, & Howard, as well as the previous one. |
3 generations: Aunt Martha, daughter Karen & her daughter Melissa. |
Chief chef/decorator Sherrie with daughters Sara and Hannah |
Birds, veggie people and ceramic rattlers, oh my! Sherrie's creations made a wonderful centerpiece. |
Sara's dog Archie was shy, but it didn't take him long to figure out that Howard and I were dog lovers. |
We played tourist in Hollywood and got ready for Thanksgiving. |
With help from Laurel, we paid a surprise visit to Richard, and found him overseeing contractors at the house. |
Richard and Laurel's beautiful house in the Hollywood Hills. |
Laurel on the terrace of her house. |
It was nice to spend time with Laurel's sweet boy while ours were stuck at home! |
After battling awful rush hour traffic in LA, we enjoyed sunset in Santa Monica & had dinner with Charlie and Sita in Venice Bch |
Howard took this beautiful picture of the solar powered ferris wheel on the Santa Monica pier. |
Howard also photographed Cirque du Soleil's Kooza bigtop at the pier. |
On Friday, we flew to Oakland, and Howard toured the USS Hornet in Alameda before we drove across the bridge to San Francisco. |
No trip's complete without a visit to the Marin Headlands. My favorite spot was closed due to high security, so I improvised. |
On Saturday, we drove down to Carmel Valley, stopping in Pacifica, Half Moon Bay, and then Santa Cruz for lunch. |
Pacifica, in mid-morning fog |
We spent one night in the serene Carmel Valley |
I got up early and revisited the Carmel Mission. |
Graves at the mission |
Carmel Mission. I've taken better pictures than this, but this time I was trying for something different. |
Unfortunately, some people felt compelled to add their graffiti to the flora. |
The cactus intriqued me. |
Archway at Carmel Mission. |
We drove south of Carmel so Ruth could tour the lighthouse she had missed several years ago while in Big Sur. |
A cool Big Sur type bus passed, but no tour guide came. Finally someone waved down a park ranger to ask what was up. |
About 15 of us waited for an hour before we finally got bad news: Volunteers for the lighthouse had not shown up; no tour! |
This was the 2nd time I was shut out. Several yrs ago, I was 5 minutes too late when I found the mtg point (farm gate). |
As a consolation prize for missing Point Sur, I made a brief stop at the tiny Point Montara light. |
2nd consolation prize: A visit to Pt. Pinos, Pacific Grove near Monterey. At least I was finally able to take a nice picture. |
We revisited the photogenic Pigeon Point light near Pescadero. Howard waited patiently while I photographed yet ANOTHER light! |
We spent one night in Santa Cruz. This picture shows surfers on a cliff near the lighthouse. |
Surfers waxing their boards on a cliff in Santa Cruz |
Howard at the Santa Cruz surfing memorial, watching surfers |
We drove Monterey's 17 Mile Drive. Here's a golfer on one of several golf courses on the drive. |
One tee on the links at Spanish Bay was amazing - right next to the ocean. |
Driving back to SF, we stopped in Pacifica so Howard could see Gorilla BBQ, which has been promoted by Food Network's Guy Fieri. |
Back in the Bay area, we met Ocho & Marge in Oakland for dinner Monday night near Jack London Square. |
President Obama followed us 3,000 miles to eat dinner with us in Oakland! |
On our final morning (Tues.) we drove around San Francisco. This was taken near Crissy Field @ 11 AM with a telephoto lens. |
Victorians in the Sunset. We also visited my fave view at Portola & Market, drove through GG park and the NW part of the city. |
Howard found and photographed this interesting mansion near Webster and Pixley in Cow Hollow. |
We searched for a dim sum place we visited before. If this place wasn't it, it sure was a good substitute (on Noriega in Sunset) |
Passed the de Young Museum in the park. Should have stopped for yet another view of the GG bridge - from the top floor! |
