Wanted to stay in Miami Beach; found the impossible: a fun & decent $99 total cost hotel (Vintro, pre-paid on Expedia). |
Went out to photograph lifeguard stations on the Beach (this one = 14th St.) |
Loved the colors and architecture! |
Another view (lower Miami Beach) |
Typical buildings along the waterfront in Miami Beach |
The lifeguard station at the jetty looked like a lighthouse! |
New, pricey Miami Beach real estate near the southern end of Miami Beach |
We saw a large, colorful lizard in a parking lot at the jetty. |

Another lifeguard station |

And one more |
One of the Lummus Park stations |
Hate the Miami Beach high rises, but love the lifeguard stations! |
Art Deco hotel |
Jorge took us to lunch Saturday at Los Ranchos, overlooking the Port of Miami |
Another big guy! |
There were some signs of damage around Miami from the recent hurricane |
Drove down to the Everglades, but I only saw 2 birds on Anhinga Trail - too much water. (Here's a purple gallinule). |
We boarded beautiful Viking Sun (room 4084) |
Bathroom |
Oceania Insignia (love her) was docked right in front of us at Port of Miami |
Getting ready to leave (Miami Beach from ship) |
During our muster drill, Carnival Victory passed us |
Before sail away |
View from ship as we departed 5:30 PM |
Woke up to Key West. Here's view from ship. |
Went out to find free Duval Loop bus & explore. Noisy roosters were everywhere |
Did a whole loop on bus, then got off to see Rhett & Scarlett at Butterfly Conservatory |
Butterfly & Nature Conservatory was worth the $9 to get in - nice place. |
There were quite a few different types of butterflies |
I kept coming back to Rhett & Scarlett's enclosure |
The place was small but there was plenty for me to photograph. |
I've seen these huge blue moths at the Brookside Gardens butterfly house |
This was a new one to me |
If you looked carefully, you could see tiny birds like this button quail |
A favorite picture of Rhett |
2 tiny birds |
Turtle! |
Flamingo closeup |
Mandarin ducks |
One more shot of a butterfly |
Next I found the Key West cemetery, which has all sorts of interesting things |
Found the famous inscriptions of "I told you I was sick" and "I'm just resting my eyes." |
There were rocks on Jewish tombstones - tradition, I believe. |
Got lost, ended up near Coast Guard station & nearby affordable housing section of KW. Ibis were hunting for food. |
Back near the port, I saw this lobster trap tree - popular in NE, but hadn't seen one in Florida |
Viking took us on a tram tour, visiting things like the artsy Strand Theater |
This is a huge sculpture outside the Customs House - WW2 reunion, I believe. |
The famous Key West Southernmost Point buoy |
