European Hornet

Vespa crabro

Tuscarora
York County, PA

These large 1 inch hornets were introduced to New York in the mid-1800's and are established in the Northeast. I have only seen them at night when they are attracted to the porch light. They are pretty scary as wasps and hornets go because of their size, but, I have read that they are fairly docile towards humans. They prey on other insects and will raid beehives to rob the honey.

Scary size, but a beautiful image with that reflection and dark background!
We are seeing hornets now sometimes in the Netherlands too.

Great close up. They are quite common here. Once I saw one catching a dragonfly.

Nice close-up capture, Ann. At least these aren't as big as those ones in the news lately from China.
