Pileated Closeup

view map

This male pileated woodpecker fledgling had apparently fallen from its nest and was on the ground at the edge of the woods alongside the road.
I was about six feet from it, and will probably never again get this close to one of these birds.
It was near Beidler Forest, South Carolina.
I hope it found its way home.
