THE BUTTERFLIES OF LOUISIANA



Note: All these images are of wild and free butterflies. As a personal preference, no images were taken in butterfly houses. This is a gallery of butterflies that are indigenous to the areas of Southeast Louisiana. Many of these images were taken around the many flower gardens I have planted on our 1/2 acre lot, inside of a 200 home subdivision. The majority of the others were taken in the Bonnet Carre' Spillway which is located between the towns of Norco and Montz, Louisiana. All images made with the Nikon D100 or D200 and one of the following lens: Nikon 300mm f/4d ED-IF and a Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8d ED-IF. A set of Nikon extension tubes were use with these lens to reduce minimum focus. All images made with the use of a tripod and natural ambient light with an occasional use of flash as fill light. In October I visited the Civil War battlefield at Pleasant Hill, LA where my great, great grandfather fought in 1864. While there I photographed a butterfly which I can now identify as the Gulf Fritillary. Thank you for this great site.

Nice pictures my business here in Baton Rouge backs up to hurricaine creek out towards central about 40 acres of wild swampy land and we have tons of butterflies out there.
I was trying to find out the name of the black ones with the neon blue markings and now I know.

I saw some beautiful catterpillars on my fennel plants. When that went into their chrysalis I was delighted! I looked on your sight to identify them. I thought they would be giant swallowtails...which is what usually lays eggs on these fennels plants! I was surprised to find out htat they were black swallowtails! Thank you for the beautiful pictures adn resource!
