May 2008

I hiked up to LeConte Lodge on Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, 2008. The forecast was for sunny skies with a chance of later afternoon showers. It was 57 at the Alum Cave Bluff trailhead at 8:00 AM. It began to get cloudy during the hike, and remained cloudy for most of the day, but it didn't rain during the hike.

I met most of the people leaving the lodge between the log steps and upper steps, and on my descent, met most of those heading up in that same general area. The trail was covered in many places by a large amount of leaf litter, which had been stripped off the trees and plants by a recent hail storm. Total ascent hiking time was exactly 3:00 hours, my personal fastest time. There were very few wildflowers blooming along the trail. I did see some sand myrtle, a few painted trilliums, some bluets, elderberry, dog hobble, and witch hobble. Most of the rhododendron showed early signs of beginning to bloom.
