They came on horse, by Jeep, by truck, by 3- and 4-wheeler, some even hiked almost seven miles on foot. They brought picnics of sandwiches and fried chicken - even cantelope and cucumbers. Over 800 people attended the annual Decoration Day on top of Cold Spring Mountain, above Horse Creek Park in Greene County, Tennessee. The event is held each year at the site of the graves of William and David Shelton and Millard Haire. The three men were killed there during the Civil War. David Shelton and his nephew William had enlisted in the Union army and were returning home during the war to a cabin on Cold Spring Mountain. However, the Sheltons and Haire, who was 13 years old at the time and was acting as a scout, were ambushed by Confederate soldiers. The families buried the three atop the mountain.

According to the National Forest Service webpage the ambush occurred on July 19, 1864. Around 1915, federal grave markers for the two soldiers were hauled to the site by ox sled. In 1998, descendents of the civilian, Haire, erected a tombstone in his honor.

For several years, on the fourth Sunday in July, the National Forest Service has opened a section of the Appalachian Trail to motorized vehicles and horses for those attending the service.

Around noon, many of those who made the trip up the winding mountain road gathered around the gravesites and sang religious hymns and listened while Dolphus Cutshaw and brothers Ed and Bill Moore spoke. Several people stepped forward to testify and a few even responded to an alter call.

With that number of people driving up a steep and sometimes muddy trail with numerous creek crossings, several agencies were on hand to insure safety, including the National Forest Service and members of the Greeneville Emergency & Rescue Squad and EMS. Only one minor incident was reported, when a 4-wheeler left the roadway and overturned. The rider was not seriously injured and was helped down the mountain.
