The term "taking the waters" has to do with enjoying naturally hot water arising from deep below the earth's surface. The reason for the color is the heavy concentration of minerals in the water. It is a magical experience to stand in a pool of water chest deep when it is the temperature of a hot bath. Very relaxing!!
