Yeah Mark is right. Wouldn't want to see this amazing pic get published with the wrong name. looks like the snake didn't even know you were there.

Uh, not exactly. That is a Puget Sound Garter (Thamnophis sirtalis pickeringii), you can tell by the scalation & head shape that it's a Common Garter (T. sirtalis) and by the color & pattern that it's a Puget Sound Garter (T. s. pickeringii).
