The First Public Library

view map

The foundation stone for the first public library in Britain,
authorised by the public libraries act of 1850
was laid on this site in 1854 and the library opened in 1857
This followed a commendable Tradition which had seen the earliest recorded Monastic library
in the country and the Norwich City Library which was founded in 1608
Now turned into a bar and restaurant

the books are in the Forum. Get over it Mr Hewis and enjoy sitting in the bar. Nice picture Mr White
