Malmedy, Belgium

We visited Malmedy two days in a row. It's a typically beautiful Ardennes town.

The photos taken on 2003-09-07 are the memorial to the American soldiers killed during the Malmedy Massacre in World War II; on December 17, 1944, the second day of the Battle of the Bulge, over 100 American soldiers were captured by the Germans, disarmed, and were then lined up and murdered in the field behind the memorial. The site sits at the crossroads in the tiny village of Baugnez, a mile or so outside Malmedy proper. The actor Charles Durning was among the handful of survivors.
