Atop the Acropolis sits one of the wonders of world architecture. Although damaged by man and time, the Parthenon retains its place as one of the greatest achievements in architecture, whether modern or ancient. Completed around 460 BC, it was the chief temple of the goddess Athena, for whom Athens is named. It replaced an earlier temple also dedicated to her; between the two of them, this site was Athena's center of worship for over a thousand years. It is spectacular to see; photographs can not do it justice.
