Great Gray Owl - (Strix nebulosa) - Chouette lapone

These are among the largest of the owls. They live in the stunted coniferous forests just below the tree-line. Occasionally they temporarily move south in winters when food supplies become scarce in their native areas. During the winter/spring of 2008/9 several great grays were temporary residents of Ottawa where they were a great hit with birders and photographers.
