Jebel Marra

Photos from the southwest corner of the Jebel Marra volcano massif (Suleil, Tobeing, Namuli, and Tarantawra villages). The area is rebel held (SLA Abdel-Wahid faction) and undestroyed, yet full of IDPs from other areas. I also climbed the stunning Mt. Jebel Marra (3000m+) and visited the crater lakes on top, but forgot to charge the camera battery that day and therefore have no photos from that trip.

Thanks for posting these photos. I climbed the Jebel Marra way back in 1982. It's a beautiful part of the world. Sudan was at peace then, and the people all over the country were amazingly friendly. After visiting Darfur we travelled south to Kenya by train and truck via Babanusa, Wau and Juba. It was a real shock when we were in Kenya to hear that civil war had broken out. The people of this land deserve much better.

In 1982 I visited the crater of Jebel Marra as part of a two-family expedition. I was ten years old. We trekked into the main crater from the village of Tora Tonga with the help of local guides and their donkeys, and camped on the shore of the inner crater lake for (I think) two nights. It was in the days before political extremism in Sudan and there was never any suggestion of our being arrested. To have spent time in a truly remote and beautiful part of the world as part of one's childhood in an astonishing privelige that is only fully appreciated in retrospect.

Great Photos-
My girlfriend and I were there in 1979 - we only got up the side of one of the craters- No one told us that there was a road that we could have taken.
I am glad that someone got pictures of the this beautiful spot- I didn't have a camera at the time.

Thanks for those photos.I spent the night with my girlfriend in the crater of Jebel Marra in 1989.
We hitched a lift in a truck from Nyala to approx 30km from the mountain we walked the rest.

We were there illegally and got arrested on our return to Nyala!Great adventure and one of the most beautiful places I ever been to.Truly wonderful.Never forget bathing in the hot springs much to the bemusement of the locals,The water was on the border of being unbearably hot!
