Canon EF-S 60mm Macro

Test shots from the new Canon EF-S 60mm Macro Lens.

I seem to have unintentionally become the only internet resource for shots produced with this lens at the moment so I've uploaded a batch of photos with the same scene at different apertures etc as well as the photos that I'm more artistically proud of!

FIRST IMPRESSIONS:
The lens is well built, AF is fast and the real time manual focusing is useful for macro work. Using the lens at f2.8 for normal shooting produces very pleasant blur in the background (I seem to remember from the press release that this is to do with the type of diaphragm used).

I'm not a lens expert, all I can say is that from a user point of view it's producing good sharp images that I'm very happy with. All the pictures here have been resized to a max of 1024 pixels in either width or height. The images are all as shot except the one labelled as cropped.

Image 3418 has some nasty artifacts around the tips of the green buds - I assume this is jpg,. Otherwise, the bokeh from this lens is superb.

I am using 100 macro (non usm) on 20d. I find it a little too long. 160mm if think requires another shutter speed. A big sacrafice. I am considering 60mm. It gives 90mm working distance at 1-1. Sounds fantastic, I hope the quality is as good as Canon say it is Any comments

This lense don't seem to be as sharp as it should be mostly compare to the other macro lense. My 105 micro is much better on my D70. Maybe you should renforce the sharpness on your 20d. Have good fun.

I'm considering between EF-S 60mm and EF 100mm also. Since they have the same price but each will provide different advantage over each other. For EF-S 60mm, it has bigger aperture but shorter range, while the 100mm provde us more space to take close-up pictures. I guess I have to wait until the EF-S 60mm officially comes out and look at the review and comparison between these lens before buying one of them.

Interesting to see your samples with the 60mm macro. I really interested in getting one, but hesitate between that and the 100 mm. Have you been able to compare sharpness with anoother sharp lens, e.g. 50 mm/1.8 or 1.4???
