When Rumi speaks of wine in his poems, he is speaking of Love,
the Love of the lover for The Divine Beloved,
wine intoxicates the drunkard,
the wine of Love brings the lover into states of ecstatic longing
and like a reed which having been plucked from the reed bed
longs for its return to its source
so the soul of the lover yearns for its return to its source.
