Triumph Relief of Shapur I

As at Bishapur the bas relief of the Triumph of Shapur I over the Roman emperors Valerian (standing to the left) and Philip the Arab (kneeling and pleading), is the most famous of the Sassanid reliefs at Naqsh-e Rustam.

Emperor Valerian was taken prisoner by Shapur after the famous battle of Edessa, and his men forced to work as slaves. You can still see the roman water mills they built at Shushtar.

Shapur wears a crenelated crown surmounted by a large globe called a Korymos, adorned by a diadem with long wavy ends.
He also wears a necklace and armlets and is adorned by a long flowing garment with pleated trousers.
His horse is beautifully decorated and has a large conical tassel which falls from the saddle.

The later addition of the infamous and highly influential Zoroastrian high-priest Kartir, is depicted to Shapur's right.
