Candi Sukuh (Temple) is a strange and mysterious Hindu temple built on the slopes of the mountain Gunung Lawu, about 35km east of Solo (Surakarta) in central Java, Indonesia. Built in the 15th century, Candu Sukuh looks like no other Javanese temple. It has a Mayan appearance from Central America. It is a fertility temple and contains some fairly explicit stone carvings.
We visited the temple in June 2002 and the weather was almost exactly the same as this second visit in December 2006. It was clear and sunny in the lowlands but it became quite misty as we climbed higher. While we were there the mist descended very quickly, as can be seen by the latter pictures. This all added to the strange atmosphere around the temple.
