Sangiran is about 15 kilometres north of Solo in central Java and was the home of ‘Java Man’. The whole area of about 48km˛ is a huge archaeological site for fossils including the skulls of ‘Java Man’ which were first unearthed by the Dutch in 1936.
On the site there is small museum which is in the process of being enlarged. There is an interesting collection of human skulls although these are mostly copies. The original skulls found here are now stored in the university city of Bandung.
The display of skulls date from Australapithicus Africanus from 2,500,000 years ago to Homio Sapiens from 40,000 years ago. Some of the skulls, which are of course copies, were found in the Sangiran area. About 60 human fossils have been found so far.
The museum I visited on previous trips was very small but quite well laid out and interesting. The museum is now being enlarged and the displays are very disjointed. The amenities are very poor. It is hard to believe that the Sangiran site is a World Heritage Site.
