Sangiran - Home of 'Java Man'

Sangiran is about 15 kilometres north of Solo in central Java and was the home of ‘Java Man’. The whole area of about 48km˛ is a huge archaeological site for fossils including the skulls of ‘Java Ma’ which were first unearthed by the Dutch in 1936.

On the site there is small museum which I have visited twice now. There is an interesting collection of human skulls although these are mostly copies. The original skulls found here are now stored in the university city of Bandung.

The dispay of skulls date from Australapithicus Africanus from 2,500,000 years ago to Homio Sapiens from 40,000 years ago. Some of the skulls, which are of course copies, were found in the Sanginan area. About 60 human fossils have been found so far.
