"Solheimajokull Glacier". Solheimajokull is a tongue of the great Mýrdalsjökull glacier and extends down to the plains of Iceland's South Coast. It is about 5 miles long and up to 1-1/2 miles wide but has both advanced and retreated from time to time over the years. We took a guided tour after being issued our helmets, ice axes, crampons and harnesses and hiking over a mile through the rugged terrain to the glacier. A pool of glacier melt is at its base which empties into the Jokulsa river.
