The family Paridae includes several varieties of Chickadees and Tits worldwide.
Only 12 centimeters in length, the gregarious Carolina Chickadee (Poecile Carolinensis) has long been one of my favorite birds. They are a year-round resident of north central Oklahoma. Easily recognized by its distinctive plumage, the Chickadee's appearance is similar to its European relatives, the Marsh and Willow Tits. The name comes from their bubbly call "chika-dee-dee-dee-dee". They are curious and have been known to become tame enough to be hand fed.
Related to the Chickadee, the Tufted Titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor) is another year-round resident of the local area. The beautiful birds are at the western edge of their expanding range. It's high-pitch call sound much like "peter-peter-peter".
