Researchers working with the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii gathered in Kerkrade Netherlands to discuss their recent research findings amidst a lot of colorful scenery and free-flowing libations. The meeting was held at a former monastery which still functions as a church and school. While the monastery grounds were in the Netherlands, the grounds were surrounded by the town of Herzogenrath which is located in Germany; the only signs of a border crossing were the "welcome to" signs. On the last day of the meeting, the group visited nearby Castle Hoensbroek. complete with a demonstration of medieval falconry and bird handling as well as the more modern pastime of hot air baloon flying.
Before the meeting several of us visited Amsterdam, where we explored some of the local flora and fauna.
