Germany is full of castles but there's only one where the guards have no ears and noses.
Fortunately they make up for it with big fixed smiles for every visitor.
The Playmobil Fun Park at Zirndorf near Nuremburg is housed in a replica castle and loaded with
themed areas for imaginative play: medieval village, Western town, fantasy dollhouse, and more.
My first sight of the Fun Park in Zirndorf spooked me.
Those usually little three-inch men, now in enlarged version, are everywhere.
Stepping into the park is like waking up to find you've shrunk and the toys have taken over.
Visitors are free to wander and make up their own games within a landscape that replicates,
in almost obsessive detail, the pictures you see in Playmobil's catalogue.
The park is very low tech and touchy-feely: toys are there to stimulate a child's imagination
without resorting to aggression, horror or complicated mechanisms.
