Every year at Cascade Ranch in Pescadero, Ca, unwanted Brussel sprouts are dumped in large piles at the edge of the fields to compost.
And as they begin to rot(and smell), flies and their larvae attract large number of sparrows, warblers and other hungry birds.
The birds, of course, attract large numbers of birders and bird photographers.
This single Harris's Sparrow, was one of the reasons that birders and bird photographers made the pilgrimage to Cascade Ranch
this year. Harris's Sparrows breed in the forest-tundra zones of north-central Canada and winter in the central United States_so this one was far from it's normal territory.
