Alpine Plateau - Lake City - Engineer Pass - California Pass
We went from Alpine Plateau near Blue Mesa to Lake City. It was raining by the time we got to Lake City where we had planned on setting up tent so we stayed at Bruno's instead and had a very nice dinner there. The fact that the bear were out in numbers in and around Lake City may have played a part in getting a room instead of the tent. Just the morning before a man sleeping in a tent was mauled by a bear just outside of Lake City. He was not injured, but probably a bit shaken.
After dinner, we took an evening walk around Lake City and from a bluff above some houses we watched a rather large bear in the back yard of one of the houses.
In the morning we headed up the San Juan Mountains over Engineer Pass to Animas Forks, California Pass and down in to Silverton. Incredibly beautiful country!
