The Sorrowful Mysteries - V. The Crucifixion

Jesus, you die on the cross for my sins; keep me in your grace.

1)They offered Him wine mixed with myrrh, but He refused it. Then they crucified Him and shared out His clothing by casting lots.

2)Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, they do not know what they are doing."

3)The leaders jeered at Him: "He saved others, let Him save Himself if he is the Christ of God, the chosen one." The soldiers and one of the criminals similarly abused Him.

4)The other criminal crucified with Him said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."

5)"Indeed, I promise you," He replied, "today you will be with me in paradise."

6)Near the cross stood Mary and John. Jesus said to His mother, "woman, this is your son," to the disciple He said, "this is your mother."

7)Invoking Psalm 22, Jesus gasps, "my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" His last words: "I am thirsty — it is accomplished — Father, into your hands I commit my spirit."

8)Jesus then cried out in a loud voice, and bowing His head He breathed His last.

9)In the darkness that had enveloped the land, the veil of the temple was torn in two, the earth quaked, tombs opened and the bodies of many holy men rose from the dead.

10)The centurion guarding Jesus gave praise to God and said, "This was a great and good man." The other bystanders went home beating their breasts.

Thanks for reminding us of this Word of God.

"For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive." (1st letter to the Corinthians, 15:22)
Notice carefully, the wound in Christ's side. Compare this wound in the rib cage area with that of Adam, as recorded in Genesis when God makes a bride, (if you will,) for Adam. Comparitively, the church is called the bride of Christ, as you may well know from scripture. What we read about Adam and Eve is just another beautiful example of Christ and His bride, the church.
You will notice also, that Adam went to sleep and his bride was created and made alive while he slept. Of course, Jesus was in the tomb for 3 days and nights, and it seems that we may say that in a certain sense, He slept too, while the church was made alive in the spiritual sense, through the shedding of His blood, (hence, the beatings, the spear in the side, etc.) His death and burial. And of course, just as Adam rose from his sleep to greet his bride. Jesus rose from the grave to greet His bride, as well - the followers who had mourned Him. So similiar would the scars in the rib cage area be if we were to stand Adam and Jesus side by side, that it would be evident that Adam and Eve were a type of symbolic representation of Christ and the church. Wonderful.

Again, we find the Old Testament requirment was that morally innocent and sinless animals (like sinless Jesus,) must die in the place of Israel for the forgiveness of sins, just like Jesus died for the forgiveness of sins. When the Israelites were in the wilderness of Sin in the desert with Moses (in the book of Exodus,) and they disobeyed God, He sent serpents to destroy them. (Haaalp!!!)The people cry out to Moses to do something, so he goes to God and God tells Him to make a bronze serpent, nail it to a pole, and all who look to it to be saved will be saved.
This required faith that looking to this thing suspended on a pole above the ground would actually save them, though. Sounds like Jesus on the cross, and yet, it was written hundreds of years before the crucifixion, or the existence of crucifixion. Astonishing. All very perfect and fitting. God thinks of everything in advance.
Notice also, that to be saved, the people did not have to try to sin less than they did yesterday, or follow any new rules. All that they had to do was have confidence that God wasn't going to count their shortcomings against them, as long as they had faith that looking to this bronze serpent nailed to a pole would save them from death. Just wonderful! What a nice guy God is to just forgive and forget! Wow! Great picture, Reimar.
