Red Fox tracks

Today I heard from a couple of neighbors about a red fox rooting around in our neighborhood woods. Later in the day I went for a walk in the woods to follow up on the sighting and while wandering around the woods I saw lots of fox tracks but no fox. I followed the tracks all around, came across a squirrel kill, passed by a number of quinzhees (bottom photo) and eventually came within 200 feet of my own yard when the tracks disappeared into a neighbor's yard where I wasn't going to follow. The tracks also led me straight to the weasel den I found before Christmas (still not sure it is weasel) and then led me to another similarly sized den that I didn't know about until now. When the fox approached the dens, it circled around them several times before moving on.

This was the first time I've heard of a fox in my neighborhood woods. I have seen tracks in the fields further south, but not in the woods (coyote, yes). For the photo above, I got down on my knees to get a low perspective on the tracks, which was something I had never done before for a track photo.

The Quinzhees were something new too. There were half a dozen of them all in one small area. I am not sure why someone went through all the trouble to build so many!

Very interesting! Hope you have an oppurtunity to meet the red fox. We have some here who sometimes hits our cat Prickent and it goes well.

A fascinating series of shots. The last one certainly is a mystery, but they do make for a neat photo. The tracks and your account are really interesting.
