In 1852 Charles & Mary DUNN sold their farm land to John & Jane CURKEET.

The Wisconsin Lafayette County Register of Deed has the grantor as “Charles DUNN and wife” and the grantee as “John CURKEET”, it is in Vol J, page 279, dated 23 May 1852.

The book 'Southwestern Wisconsin: Old Crawford County' pub. 1932, Chapter VII, Prominent Men – First Events – Reminiscences, page 629 said that DUNN's log built home is situated on what is now the farm of Edwin M. CURKEET in Elk Grove township. Edwin M. CURKEET died in 1921, so this information must have come from his son John and is incorrect. When John & Jane bought the farm in 1852, DUNN's home was moved away from the stream area and place at a better area on that land. This would be northeast of the stream.

As for the house, after John & Jane (MARTIN) CURKEET moved to Darlington it became his son James Thomas & Emily Ann (JULIAN) CURKEET home, then it went to is son Calvert James & Fern Lois (ENLOE) CURKEET home. His wife Fern died giving birth to a still born child, so later he married Mary ‘LaVerna’ ASHTON of Belmont. Calvert and LaVerna lived there for a while but later moved to Platteville and my father and Blanch (GOKE) CURKEET moved in to it. They had six boys there, which I am the 5th child. I lived my first 6 years in this home. In 1960, we moved to Platteville and LaVerna sold the land to a REICHERS, who sold it to someone else. About two years ago this house was torn down, what a waste :(

After 1852, and the house was moved to the new location, it was added on to at least three times. It went from one floor to one and half story house with at basement. They also added onto the east and north sides. I have a lot of photographs of this area, one of which has the full farm with the home being visible.

I am related to some from this area... Donald E. Curkeet cricket_@ameritech.net
