Week 1: Introduction
• Tools and techniques, binoculars, etc., other resources. Field guide recommendations: Sibley (the big one), Peterson (Eastern) or Nat. Geographic. The SIBLEY guide to Birds 2nd ed. (National Audubon Society) by David Allen Sibley, Kobpf Pub. Peterson Field Guide to Birds of Eastern and Central North America (6th Ed.) by Roger Tory Peterson. National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America (6th Ed. or later). There are a few others equally as good which would substitute.

• “Tennessee 300”… bird order, field card, checklist etc.

• Birding sites, organizations, & resources

• Overview: migration, dispersal, seasonal ranges

• “Our birds”, residents and migrants and their seasonal changes

• Preview of birds covered in this class; Common Birds I & II


Week 2: Woodland Birds
• Woodpeckers
• Wrens
• Hawks & owls

Week 3: Water Birds
• Ducks, geese
• Waders, gulls
• Blackbirds, sparrows, finches

Week 4: Spring Migrants
• Warblers & vireos
• Tanagers, buntings
