Ecuador is one of the smallest South American countries, squeezed in by Columbia and Peru. Yet it still has possibly the richest concentrations of tropical birds, especially hummingbirds of any country. It holds aprox. 132 species of hummers, Columbia has the most in one country -143, but is a much larger country than Ecuador. With a well developed network of tourist birding lodges, and variety of terrain in a relatively small area (the Andes make for some rapid changes in climate/altitude/vegetation variety), a lot of birds can be seen with minimum effort (and at reasonable cost). It's a fantastic place for tropical birds, especially hummers.
