My Last Night in Viet Nam

This was the large version of my short timer's calendar to cover the final 2 weeks. I do not recall a lot (anything) about the party! I quit smoking when I got back to the states!

My last day wasn't too well documented but I remember it well. I just had to make a statement at the club that last night, after dealing with months of short timers announcing their days left before departure from Nam. I gave all the short timers there time to rub it in and I quote their abusive slurred statements " 6 days!, 2 days!, 3 days!". Things calmed down. My night had arrived. I climbed up on the table with beer in hand and screamed out "10 hours!". Finally got that off my chest.

was there as a seaman in '69, (Saigon)left a piece of myself there as i had to bury one of my best friend there, killed not in action but in a bar

The look of a man so short he needn't light up another cigarette. There's just not enough time to finish before boarding the plane. Did you save your shortimer calendar? I wish I had mine.

I love this image in that it tells a story that has been repeated exactly countless of times since, in all the various conflicts since Vietnam... and I'm certain that today, in Iraq, and in Afghanistan... among others, there are very similar parties. It's a joyful time for those departing, but so sad that there's a new for such a parties. The sad truth though, is that there will always be such gatherings... that's life in our times...
You came a long way since Richard... and you have reasons to be a very proud man. The road you've travelled in life has enabled you to see life in a wonderful way today, and to share it with us on PBase.
Thank you for that Richard
