Choreographing a New Piece

Robert Dekkers is creating a new dance for the Gwinnett Ballet and I was allowed to document this very creative process. I used my 5D and my 70-200 f2.8 L IS lens. ISO was set at 1600. Robert is not only a very talented Choreographer, he is a fabulous dancer. See https://pbase.com/rcalmes/august_2006_studio

Hehehe, it will come hardly as a surprise to read that I prefer the back stage shots that you have taken preceding the performance over the actual performance. Perhaps it is the lack of the nervous music that draws me to looking at these incredible moves and superb choreography instead. That is what you have captured and that is what we have the pleasure of seeing in these shots. Terrific work!

These images are beautiful. Your use of excellent lighting and great composition is a very moving tribute to the ballet. You not only capture the movement but the passion, the emotion and the soul of these dancers. Putting the workout in b&w was an excellent idea, it gives the viewer a better 'feel' of the class, the room, the sounds and even the physical pain that dancers are famous for working straight through. Your galleries remind me of one of my favorite films on the ballet, 'Etoiles: Dancers of the Paris Ballet (2002). Thank you, Michael Corral, Los Angeles, California, USA

It gives us an idea of the work behind a production. I like the small details - the bottle of water, the care of the feet, the friendships, the reflective moments, etc.

Great! So, bright in the mirrored environment while planning, as opposed to your normal backstage at night during performance. However, you are still bringing the candid intimacy. I really enjoy the DOF interaction with the mirrors and your choices. More! g
