Brush-tipped Emerald (Somatochlora walshii)

A member of the Somatochlora genus, otherwise known as the "striped emeralds." (1) The anterior yellow thoracic side stripe is a long, slender stripe, while the posterior yellow stripe is a smaller oval. (2) The abdomen is disproportionately SHORT with small pale spots on some mid-segments. (3) Male claspers are ski-shaped but have enlarged tips that are hairy, while the female has a relatively short and pointed "Y-type" egg spout that is held diagonal to the abdomen. As in other Somatochlorans, this combination of thoracic stripe pattern, abdominal markings, and abdominal appendages, especially coupled with the short abdomen, is unique. This species is uncommonly found throughout northern Wisconsin. I saw just a few individuals in 2008 but considerably more in 2009.
